College of Education

Established in 1879, the College of Education was the first teacher preparation institute in Texas. In 1923, Sam Houston Normal Institute became Sam Houston Teachers College. The College’s educational mission continued to broaden and in 1969 became Sam Houston State University. 

Under the leadership of Dean Stacey Edmonson, the College continues the legacy of preparing exceptional educators and the commitment to making a difference in the lives of students. The College is home to four departments; (Counselor Education, Educational Leadership, Library Science & Technology, and the School of Teaching and Learning); multiple service and research centers and a charter school.

We like to say the university grew up around the College of Education and that our roots run deep in preparing the best educators in the State of Texas. Your gifts will ensure that the College of Education continues to develop Today's Learners, Tomorrow's Leaders!

Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Mandy Epley ’97, Navarro ISD Superintendent, Dr. LaTonya Goffney ’99, ’03, ’11, Aldine ISD Superintendent, and Dr. Rhonda Mason ’98, ’22, Lamar CISD Area Superintendent, every 10 gifts to the College of Education unlocks an additional $1,000—up to $3,000— to uplift future educators.
